Frequently Asked Questions

Which model works best?

All models offered by WORKMASTER® are great tools, but each has its own strengths and limitations. Which will work best for you depends on what your specific goals and objectives are in choosing a WORKMASTER® Hopper Car Gate Opener. You need to think about:

  • How many hopper gates you regularly open or close?
  • How difficult are the hopper gates to open or close?
  • What are the terrain and space conditions like at your unloading site?
  • What power supply do you have or can get at the site?
  • Do you have budget or funding limitations?

How can I be sure that it will open my hopper car gates?

Hopper gate difficulty varies greatly depending on:

  • Condition of the Hopper Gates
  • Type of Slide Gate (Fixed or Rolling Capstan)
  • Product in the Railcar
  • Weather and Site Conditions

Can you make a recommendation that you will stand behind?

We can! We use a process that involves you providing information that starts with an Application Data Sheet. Based on the information provided and a consultation with one of our Product Specialists, a recommendation will be made. If the unit does not perform to your satisfaction, you may return it for full credit.

Can I try the unit recommended to me before ordering?

You can! Complete an Application Data Sheet and discuss your needs with one of our Product Specialists. Together, we’ll agree on a unit that will work for you, and then you can issue an authorized “Trial” Purchase Order and we’ll ship that model to you for Trial. If you are not satisfied, you can return the unit for full credit.

When the time comes, where can I get the unit repaired or can I repair it in-house?

We offer a One (1) Year Warranty against defects in workmanship or materials.

Where are repairs or services performed?

Our Authorized Warranty Center, AIRMATIC INC, offers a comprehensive service and repair program with fast turnaround on repairs or same-day shipment on repair parts orders if you choose to repair the gate opener yourself (our Operators Manual fully explains what you need to know).

How can I find a Local Distributor for my area?

We will work with you directly or through one of our Authorized Dealers. Speak with one of our Product Specialists for more details.

What's wrong with using a pry bar to open hopper gates?

Using a pry bar to open hopper car gates is a very unsafe practice. The majority of injuries that occur when using a pry bar are due to the bar slipping from the notched holes on the capstan barrel. Slipping pry bars result in your workers being at great risk for lost time injuries from contusions, extremely serious cuts and lacerations, broken bones, concussions, or worse. Even if the pry bar does not slip, your workers are at great risk for strain and sprain injuries of the back, arms, shoulders, and legs.

What is the air pressure (PSI) and air consumption (CFM) required to properly operate the pneumatic models?

We require a minimum of 80 PSI but no more than 90 PSI to operate our pneumatic hopper car gate openers. The GO-A3-PW requires only 19 CFM at 90 PSI, and the GO-A8-PW requires about 115 CFM at 90 PSI when under load.

What if my airline supply isn't quite adequate?

If air volume is an issue, we can discuss the use of a dedicated receiver tank. If the air quality is an issue, we can recommend and supply the proper airline components to deliver grit, oil, and water-free air. It is recommended best practice to install an airline regulator with gauge at point of use to verify the pressure is feeding the tool.

Where do I purchase replacement parts and/or components?

We are located in Malvern, PA and stock a wide range of accessories and parts, and can typically respond the same day.

Is on-site training available?

Depending on the tool, we supply either printed instructions and/or a DVD to help you become familiar with the proper way to use our tools. On-site training may be available if it makes sense, and would be decided by our Product Sales Manager.
